When alternative filtration media microglass is used as a filter support medium it leads to emissions that are an increasing concern for the industry. Colback® provides a healthier and more effective alternative.
Wet-laid media have frequently been used as a support for the activated carbon filters used within cabin air filters. However their microglass formulation and method of manufacture lead to emissions from airborne glass, adhesives and binders. Cabin air filter producers were looking for a superior product without these health issues, that could offer excellent filter capacity and cope with the automotive industry’s severe conditioning tests.
Colback is a thermally bonded spunlaid nonwoven made from mechanically drawn bi-component yarn. Without adhesives there’s no risk of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Colback can also deliver high stiffness at low weight and thickness. It has an open structure with good air permeability, and is both dimensionally and thermally stable. This delivers excellent pleating, efficient manufacturing and a high filter capacity.
Rigorous tests proved Colback-based cabin air filters to be effective, high-performing and more durable than wet-laid alternatives. Even under the severest humidity and high/low temperature tests they didn’t buckle, and the distance between pleats remained consistent. Pressure drop and dust holding capacity exceeded expectations. With this support from Colback, our clients found their products being increasingly specified for a range of platforms and leading car makers.
